Carmel officials released a Draft Street Addressing Map on Jan. 13, giving residents an idea of what adopting addresses for the first time in its 109-year history might look like. Formal adoption of address numbers could come as soon as May.
The draft map shows most of the city in blue, where properties will be assigned addresses. A few parts are shown in brown where there is no current number assignment or is an annexed area not subject to an address number.
Map users can zoom in and see specific assessor parcel numbers, or APNs, along with a proposed address. An explainer released by the city uses Carmel City Hall as an example—it's proposed address is 662 Monte Verde St. (The second number shown on each parcel under the address number is the last six digits of the APN.)
Corner lots were numbered based on which entrance facing a street had the widest and most accessible door for first responders, following best practices used by other cities and based on advice by Carmel Police Chief Todd Trayer and Fire Chief Patrick Moore, according to the explainer.
Officials were careful to remind residents that the map is only a draft and the addresses shown as examples should not be used for providing a location. It's only meant as a tool to help familiarize residents with the proposed system.
"The address number assignments in this map have not been finalized or implemented and are still subject to final approval by the [City], County of Monterey and U.S. Postal Service Address Management Systems," they said.
Residents can get more information at a "Walk-In Day" inside City Hall Council Chambers, being held from 1-3:30pm, Friday, Jan. 23, where the Street Addresses Group will answer questions and show residents how to navigate the draft map.
For now, City Hall's official address is Monte Verde Street between Ocean and 7th avenues.
