Bixby Bridge near Big Sur.

UPDATE 02/02/2016: Authorities confirm the body of BASE jumper Rami Kajala, 42, was recovered on Jan. 30 below the Big Sur Bixby Bridge. The second BASE jumper, Mary “Katie” Connell, has not yet been located.

Two people who base jumped off Bixby Bridge Wednesday morning are presumed dead after a video showing one of them being swept out to sea was recovered from the scene, authorities said Monday.

The video of the incident was captured by one of base jumper’s camera, which was attached to his helmet. The unidentified man, who authorities say was from Finland, was standing on the bridge when his friend, identified as Mary “Katie” Connell, made the plunge.

The video shows Connell landing at the mouth of the Bixby Creek where it meets the ocean, authorities say. They believe a series of waves crashed on top of her and dragged her out to sea.

“After three waves hit her, you don’t see her again,” says John Thornburg, a spokesman with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

After seeing Connell struggle with the waves, the man parachuted 279 feet down to try and help her out of the water. The last moment seen on camera, according to law enforcement, shows him landing safely on the beach, but the footage stops after he takes off his parachute and helmet.

“We presume he went out to rescue her and that both got dragged into the ocean,” Thornburg says.

The first search by the sheriff’s office dive team was conducted on Monday morning, but Thornburg says the couple has not been located yet. “We don’t have much to go with,” he adds.

The video has not and will not be released to the public per the request of Connell's family. Connell was in her mid-20s and worked as a nurse in Ventura.
