Big Sur "fire sale" for Pfeiffer recovery continues 10am-2pm today.

"Fire sale" was never a more appropriate descriptor.

After kind hearts from the county, region and beyond responded to December's Pfeiffer Fire with a mountain of donated clothing, a band of volunteers patiently and systematically sorted and sifted through it over the course of several days.

After displaced fire victims took what they could use to replenish closets turned to ashes, those volunteers—led by Jessica Pinney, who herself was left without a home to go to after the fire ravaged Pfeiffer Ridge—opened up the inventory to the public. 

The result: one of the coolest pop-up thrift stores to pile up fabric.

Oh, and two days of sales this weekend. As the bootstrap effort hung garage-sale-style signs on street poles and word went out via social media, locals descended to load up on everything from purple onesy ski jumpers to suede jackets to designer blouses. Still more volunteers stuck around to help hang clothes and keep the upstart operation organized.

Saturday alone netted nearly $2,500 for direct fire relief that will go through the Coast Property Owners Association, which has set up 100-percent direct relief donations to those affected after managing a similar effort in the wake of the Basin Complex Fire in 2009. Totals for the two days surpassed $4,500.

"It's been better than I hoped," Pinney says, "and it's been neat to see so many people help out."

And plenty of finds remain, so the sale has been extended to 10am-2pm today, Monday, Jan. 13, at the warehouse/thrift super store at 1805 Conta Costa Ave. in Sand City.
