A 2025 independent audit on Salinas' Measure G shows how the money was spent.

An extension of Measure G, a 1-cent sales tax Salinas voters passed in 2014, will be on the Nov. 3 ballot. The measure has a 15-year term and is set to phase out in 2029 if voters don’t renew it. 

The measure has become a key source of income in the city. Last fiscal year, it generated $34.5 million. 

Tomorrow, July 30, the Measure G oversight committee will receive the results of an audit conducted in 2025. The audit confirms that the $39.5 million spent from Measure G funds matches the city’s financial records from the 2024-2025 fiscal year. 

“The FY 2024-25 report demonstrates substantial service delivery and infrastructure activity,” the audit report stated. “Continued project-level reporting will make the connection between tax revenue and neighborhood results clearer to the public.”

During the previous fiscal year, 2024-2025, Measure G generated $37.3 million and funded 106.5 positions, repaired 10,830 potholes and conducted 2,941 code enforcement inspections (1,444 cases were closed), according to the report. 

It funded public safety and first responder departments, repair and beautification projects including streets and sidewalks, and provided homeless services. 

The largest amount, $24.9 million, funded capital improvement projects including $2 million for flood damage repairs and $1.8 million for the street preventative maintenance program. Public Works received $7.1 million (more than half of its budget allocation); Salinas PD, $6.3 million; and $5.5 million for recreation (about a third of the budget allocation for Libraries and Community Services). 

City Council will receive the results of the audit in August.
