The Power Plant once again proves powerful. This coffee spot/plant shop that opened in 2020 has survived three catastrophes—the pandemic, the January 2025 fire at Vistra's battery energy storage facility, when the community was evacuated, and its own fire in May.
A few months later, the venue is back in the game, turning the spacious back of the cafe into a wine and beer space, and bringing on a food truck. Both new additions come with new menus and are currently operational Thursday to Monday, noon-8pm, while the front is open daily 7:30am-4pm.
The truck is called Foodlab and its menu is different in character than what can be ordered at the front of the cafe that specializes in coffee, sandwiches and baked goods, as well as a fair amount of to-go breakfast/lunch items. The truck serves a more serious and substantial bite. Seafood is the theme; there are fish and chips with house remoulade, fish tacos, "landing house chowder," burgers and fries. Calamari is on the way. One is invited to sit inside or outside.
Small bites go with the wine and beer part of the venue that until recently was mainly the plant retail space. The plants are still there—one of the most wonderful things about this space—but with more seating areas. Sipping wine and beer, the customers are invited to try such bites as hummus, artichoke salad, toast and crostini.
All wines come from California; the beer menu starts with Modelo but has also Alvarado Street Brewery's lager, and everything in between.
During lunchtime on a Wednesday, the front door cafe traffic is steady. Many customers stay to eat their sandwich and have their coffee just for the pleasure of being for a while in this soothing indoor botanical garden. One can only imagine a Thursday or Friday afternoon, when the truck is open and the wine and beer is being poured.
