Steve DeMarco knew what he needed.

It wasn't much, or at least he didn't think it was—until he didn't have it.

It was…a decent slice of pizza.

His definition of what qualifies borders on genetic.

He was born and raised near Albany, New York.

You can hear the New York Italian in his voice. You can see it in the red-checkered tablecloths, Godfather movie posters and the red-white-and-green color scheme at his brand new DeMarco's New York-style Pizzeria on Broadway in Seaside, opening today at 11am.

And you can taste it in the pizza.

"This is a lifelong dream," he says. "I grew up in the kitchen, hands-on, learned everything from my mom and pop."

The old-school sensibility appears throughout the menu, where there are mozzarella sticks ($5), grandma's garlic knots ($4) and the antipasta salad ($5-$8) up top, and homemade pastas ($12-$14), minestrone ($5-$8) and Rat Pack deli sandwiches on hoagie rolls ($5/5-inch, $10/10-inch).

On the opposite side appear the calzones and pizzas (and the Al Capone and De Niro burgers).

The stuffed calzones ($9) include mozzarella, parmesan, chopped onions, tomatoes, basil, tomato sauce, fresh garlic and one of three meats (pepperoni, sausage or meatballs).

"We're not running a health spa here," DeMarco says.

Pizzas start at $6 for a personal, $18 for a large cheese with $1 a topping.

Some of the specialties ($20 each): The Soprano supreme with bell peppers, onion, pepperoni, mushroom, Italian sausage; the Godfather with the calzone meats; and the Marilyn Monroe with white sauce, fresh basil and Parmesan. (All come with mozzarella.)

Best of all pepperoni and cheese pizza is available by the slice, something that doesn't happen outside of Pizza My Heart at Del Monte Center.

English Ales will join Coors Light, Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada on the taps.
