Put the knife down: Authorities are advising you rethink that avocado toast.
Henry Avocado Corporation, an Escondido-based grower and distributor of their namesake fruit, has issued a voluntary recall of its California-grown avocados, according to a March 23 press release on the company's site.
Avocados, both conventional and organic, sorted at one of the company's packing facilities may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The recall was issued after a routine government inspection of the facility and showed positive test results. (The company report they started packing in that particularly facility in January 2019.)
Avocados that have been voluntarily recalled have come from the same facility and have been shipped to six states: California, Wisconsin, Florida, Arizona, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
Listeria can cause deadly infections to vulnerable populations like the elderly, those with compromised immune systems and young children. Healthy individuals may still experience short-term symptoms including fever, nausea, headaches and abdominal pain. Listeria in pregnant women has been known to cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
All recalled avocados are California-grown. Conventional avocados are labeled "Bravocado" and organic avocados are labeled "organic" and "California." Retailers can also confirm a recalled product by the product's barcode. Recalled avocados can be returned for a full refund.
Henry's Avocado confirms that imported Mexican-grown avocados distributed by them are safe for consumption. There have been no reported illnesses.
