In 2011, James Durbin followed a marching band onto the "American Idol" stage and proceeded to belt out an impressively clean and high-climbing version of "Uprising" (by Muse).
"They will stop degrading us," he booms smoothly. "We will be victorious."
The Santa Cruz would go onto make "Idol" history—and I'm not talking about his collaboration with Judas Priest—becoming the first contestant to receive a homecoming without finishing in the top three. (He was fourth.)
This Thursday, Aug. 13, he provides some of the most electrifying and heartfelt moments of a swanky affair to raise money for curing mental illness, Aim for Mental Health, at Parc du Concours next to the Gooding & Co. auction tents.
He'll come out to a marching band, singing "Uprising," and those lyrics will carry more power.
After several other songs, he will also speak personally about mental illness, having been diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and Asperger syndrome shortly after his father died of a heroin overdose when Durbin was 9.
