Salinas Parade of Lights

Salinas Parade of Lights

After some back and forth, the 2024 Salinas Holiday Parade Of Lights is back on the calendar for Sunday, Dec. 1.

The City of Salinas and Salinas Lights Parade nonprofit got into a misunderstanding; the nonprofit needed City’s assistance, which it received. Everybody, get back to work, practicing your dances, dressing up and thinking about how to decorate your vehicle.

City officials helped with insurance, ordered barriers and orange cones. There was also a community call for volunteers. They delivered, too. Many City staff got involved in pursuing permits from CalTrans and making sure paradegoers have access to restrooms.

The parade needed at least 100 volunteers to keep the event organized and safe, and as of Tuesday, Nov. 19, it has registered 106 volunteers, according to Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig.

“We have our minimum,” she says. “We can accept up to 150 so we are calling to groups that want to join."

Craig herself made a few phone calls, she says, getting a few donors involved.

Salinas Holiday Parade Of Lights has been taking place since at least 2010, Craig says.

“What I love the most about this event is that it attracts all ages," Craig says. "We have marching bands, dancing troupes, low-riders and seniors.”

Add to that cookies, government representatives and ugly holiday sweaters, and you get the gist. Craig cannot wait to wear her LED-jacket.

Parade registration for participants is open until Wednesday, Nov. 27.

6pm Sunday, Dec. 1. Main Street, downtown Salinas. 905-1466, salinasholidayparadeoflights.org.
