Smuin Ballet celebrates 20 years of its holiday show at Sunset Center this weekend.

This weekend is the 20th anniversary of Smuin Ballet's holiday dance show—coming to Carmel's Sunset Center 8pm this Friday and 2pm Saturday—so they're going all out, adding four new dances to the mix.

The show, The Christmas Ballet, Uncorked!, is dividied into two acts. The first is more traditional classical ballet, with en pointe tippy-toe dancing, twirls, lifts and leaps. The music there includes "Magnificat" and "For Unto Us a Child is Born."

But it also contains, according to Artistic Director Celia Fushille, "'The Gloustershire Wassail,' a rousing tribute to English country dancing, and 'Licht bensh'n,' a Jewish klezmer dance that's first lighthearted and then deeply moving."

The second is more contemporary and footloose, packed with pop cultural references: A droopy Christmas trees trying to outrun the chainsaw, a surfer dude on Christmas Island, Frosty the Snowman, Elvis makes a cameo for "Blue Christmas," a piece choreographed to Duke Ellington's "Sugar Rum Cherry."

"Benny Goodman has the whole cast swinging at a sock-hop version of 'Winter Weather,' complete with saddle shoes and letter-sweaters," Fushille says. "There is a stunning piece [founder] Michael Smuin choreographed to a lively 'La Calandria' recorded by Linda Ronstadt, a tribute to her Mexican heritage."

Weston Krukow, son of San Francisco Giants announcer Mike Krukow, will premier a piece about a grouchy green man who hates Christmas.

Fushille suggests people watch especially for former Smuin dancer and current choreographer-in-residence Amy Seiwert's new piece set to Chanticleer's "Caroling, Caroling/Bright, Bright" and Nicole Haskin's' new number set to James Galway's "Fantasia" on I Saw Three Ships.

"Both works are so musically inspired," she says. "I think people will really notice some inventive new movement. They will also see some stunning leaps in 'Drummer Boy' that are fun to watch."
