Monterey Museum of Art presents its new acquisitions to its vast permanent collection.
Independently of its four-exhibit winter season, another exhibition opened and will be on display until July 20. Its title is Celebrating California Art: Recent Acquisitions.
The pieces in this exhibition, acquired over the last decade, fill gaps in the museum’s collection. This exhibition is a chance to see a small portion of what the museum has added over the past eight years.
Visit the Entry Gallery on the first floor that now displays contemporary artists, whose works serve as a reflection of California’s current cultural climate. “These pieces allow us to reflect upon the differing experiences of artists living in today’s world,” according to MMA.
The exhibition continues upstairs in the Marble Galleries. The Outer Marble Gallery closely relates to the work downstairs, representing contemporary pieces—a majority by living artists. In contrast, the Inner Marble Gallery represents historical works recently acquired by the museum. Many of the artworks show familiar views of Monterey and the larger California landscape, but represent well-known artists, some of whom were previously missing from the museum’s collection.
Below one can see a piece by Susan Hyde Greene, "Deeply Hidden Beauty," who is an award-winning fine art photographer. She cuts her images apart to then stitch them back together in a reflection of relationships and humanity. An avid traveler, her artwork is created from images from all over the world. Hyde Greene's images relay stories from impressions of experiences, thoughts and memories about the world around her.

The other artist we present below is Diane Pierce who uses photography as her main tool. Themes present in her work are: collected letters, an idea about marriage, observation during walks and exploration of still life.

Monterey Museum of Art's mission is to collect artwork that accurately represents the diversity of California art—past, present and future.
“Our commitment is to recognize and address the inequalities within the art world and acquire art from populations underrepresented in our collection,” reads the museum’s press release.
Support for this exhibition is provided by Susan DuCoeur and Judith M. Marshall.
