Salinas Union High School District purchased the Kasavan and Pope Building on Lincoln Street to house administrative offices. It is expected to save the district money on external leases and free up spaces on campuses.

Salinas Union High School District has acquired 450 Lincoln Ave., a commercial building in downtown Salinas, for $4.6 million. The district bought the building from the Paul L. Miller 2002 Revocable Trust using general and unrestricted funds.

According to a district staff report provided to the board of trustees, this acquisition will “address critical space and fiscal needs.”

According to SUHSD documents, the building will save the district about $13,000 per month, or $156,000 annually, by avoiding external leases.

The district will also have more space at various campuses since it would move administrative offices, freeing up on-campus offices and classrooms.

The property, known as the Kasavan & Pope Building, is a two-story, 17,672-square-foot office building with 56 parking spaces, and was built in 1989. The plan is that it will house SUHSD administrative offices.

The board initially approved the purchase in April after a year of negotiations. The district intended to purchase the building last year, but the seller decided to hold the property. At the time, the price was $4.5 million.

SUHSD administrators did not respond to requests for comment or answer Salinas Valley Now's questions about anticipated move-in dates or what will happen to the current tenants.
