A new housing production dashboard has been launched for the City of Salinas.
This interactive platform converts complex housing data into clear, accessible visuals placing critical information directly in the hands of residents, developers and decision-makers.
“From the community perspective, it's an education tool, so you can see how much work is happening around housing on the state and federal level,” says Salinas Community Relations Manager Sophia Rome. “And on the leadership side it provides leaders with a clear snapshot of where the city is when it comes to housing activities, which then gives the city good data and information as leaders are making decisions.”
The tool is actively putting data in near real-time allowing for transparency and a new benchmark for modern, data-driven governance.
This interactive platform monitors housing production by affordability level and project status, provides geographic insights on development trends across Salinas, including future growth areas. One future growth area is for example roundabout construction on East Boronda Road near McKinnon Elementary School. The dashboard also tracks progress toward meeting the state-mandated Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) goals and Housing Element implementation. Salinas is obligated to plan for 6,674 new housing units to be built between 2023-2031. According to the dashboard, City officials have issued all approvals for 185 units, just under 3 percent of that goal. Those units are all market rate.
The RHNA process requires the City to plan for 3,462 market-rate units; 1,692 moderate-income units; 600 low-income; and 920 very-low-income.
Currently the city has two other dashboards giving the public the ability to view information on Fire Department response statistics and the Salinas Municipal Airport. All three dashboards are viewable at salinas.gov/dashboards.
