Carmel Police nab two suspects in two unrelated burglaries in the span of one day.

Carmel's many jewelry stores present an obvious target for burglars. The post office, not so much.

A typical day for a Carmel police officer might involve investigating reports of suspicious behavior, or perhaps even chasing an escaped pig down the street, but yesterday and early this morning, police in the normally sleepy town arrested two suspects in two separate burglaries.

According to a press release from the Carmel Police Department, the first case broke yesterday afternoon when a police officer "spotted a man and woman outside the downtown Carmel Post Office who matched the description of suspects in the burglary of a vehicle at Mission and Fifth on Sunday (April 19)."

Upon being searched, officers found that 31-year-old Sand City resident Brandon Calantoc and a 30-year-old Seaside woman were in possession of mail and drug paraphernalia. The two are suspected to have forced open post office boxes and stolen mail and a search of their car revealed stolen credit cards and "personal information."

Calantoc was arrested and charged with theft, burglary, drugs and possession of stolen property and transported to Monterey County Jail. The woman was released with a citation on drug-related charges.

The second burglary occurred sometime after midnight, when a suspect is thought to have hid in a bathroom and cut a hole into Viau Estate Jewelry, located on Mission Street between Ocean Avenue and 7th Avenue.

Responding to an alarm, police spotted San Diego resident Jiri Grym, 64, leaving a bathroom in a back alley of the jewelry story. The duffel bag in Grym's possession, according the statement, held an estimated $250,000 in jewelry.

Grym was charged with burglary and booked into Monterey County Jail.
