In an effort to focus its readers’ resources where they can do the most good in a difficult economy, Monterey County Weekly has joined forces with 72 other weekly newspapers across the country in a first-of-its-kind economic development program.

The grassroots effort asks the readers of each of the newspapers to pledge to spend $100 each this holiday season at local and independent merchants, service providers and restaurants. This nominal outlay directed specifically to non-chain outlets has the potential to deliver a resounding benefit to local communities 58% larger than if the money was spent only with big box retailers.
