A twist of typography reveals Alissa Bell Carnazzo and Anthony Carnazzo’s simple vision for Stationæry: the æ, or ash, that marries “stationary” and “stationery.” It’s a nod to Anthony’s background in hospitality and Alissa’s career as a stationer. With food, coffee and wares, the pair promises a feast for the eyes, appetite and spirit at the new restaurant and coffee shop.
Both grew up here in Monterey County and then moved in Los Angeles before ultimately returning home in December to raise their son closer to family.
While the restaurant officially debuts next week, a soft opening is currently underway for those willing to brave Carmel’s car crowds.
Weekly: Avocado toast, yes or no?
ABC: I love to hate it. I don’t order it. I think it’s far too trendy. I’m kind of opinionated about it. I never order it at a restaurant.
AC: I’d say, ‘heck yes!’ with caveats. Heck yes, because when you have a good one, it’s very satisfying. The caveat is the evolution of avocado toast, as I’ve observed, a lot of speciality coffee bars don’t have the culinary experience to execute it.
What’s your favorite breakfast food?
ABC: Our ritual of making pancakes on Sundays, out of the box.
AC: You took mine! It’s our family tradition to make pancakes with [our son] Giacomo on Sundays.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
ABC: I like to order a cafe au lait.
AC: When I walk into a speciality coffee bar, I’ll order a shot and a cappuccino right away, then I sit down with a brewed coffee. That’s the holy trinity there.
