Elephants, tigers and a whole loot of exotic animals call Salinas home.
Say what now?
The Monterey Zoo, formally known as Wild Things, houses 183 animals who rescued from circuses, carnivals, SPCA, private zoos and breeders.
Run by founder and owner Charlie Sammut, the official debut of Wild Things as The Monterey Zoo started with the Aug. 22 opening of the Tiger Exhibit.
Relocating the zoo’s big kitties to a more spacious and accommodating living environment, their new zone includes climbing structures and fountain baths.
Sammut and zoo curator Heather Greaux beam with pride as they share with visitors the names and stories of their rescue animals, each of which they have obvious loving bonds with.
While Sammut and his team await funding to build future exhibits for lions, bears and leopards, the tiger exhibit provides the community with an interactive learning experience that teaches about the animals, the environment, and how humans can maintain both.
In addition to the luxurious new home for the big striped cats, visitors can also enjoy meeting the likes of curious lemurs, friendly elephants and a flirty bearcat.
