Another packed weekend is upon us. Agata Popęda here, trying to decide on what to do this weekend. There is enough fun going on in Monterey County that I would need at least two more Agatas to hit the most important events. Oh, well.
April is—among many things—National Poetry Month. There are tons of “poetic” events to choose from, starting with the Monterey Poetry Festival (Friday and Saturday), to featuring Monterey County Poet Laureate Rachelle Escamilla in Poetry & Pole at Pearl Hour in Monterey (8pm tonight), to a poetry reading at Tor House (3pm Saturday), also with Escamilla.
Saturday is Record Store Day and Recycled Records in Monterey will celebrate from 10am-6pm. A vinyl celebration will take place at 7pm tonight at Pop and Hiss in Pacific Grove and noon Saturday along with the Pop and Hiss Anniversary Party. The following night, in the same location, the poets of Monterey County will join the celebration, as you should.
Downtown Monterey—Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Custom House Plaza—will be dominated by Whalefest, a family-friendly, day-long festivity. PhotoCarmel is still on. It’s a good time to pop into the Monterey Peninsula College Gallery on the MPC campus and see their special exhibit. The Monterey Peninsula College Asian Student Association culture show takes place at 7pm on Saturday inside the MPC Music Hall.
Earth Day is also nearly upon us. Celebrations start soon and will continue for another two weeks—this Saturday is the 19th Annual Marina Earth Day at Locke-Paddon Park.
In Sand City, nonprofit Community Human Services hosts a free, donations-encouraged concert—titled Banding Together—noon-6pm this Saturday. There are concerts at Wendi Kirby Music in Monterey tonight (Latin Jazz Collective), Hidden Valley Music Seminars on Sunday (Dance to My Heartbreak) and Golden State Theatre presents Pete Floyd (a tribute to Pink Floyd), also tonight.
Stagewise, watch We Will Rock You on MPC’s Morgan Stock Stage, or Mary Poppins in Salinas High School (tonight and Saturday). Paper Wing Theatre in Monterey continues with A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and PacRep still shows The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Many other activities take place this weekend—including two of the biggest events of the year: Life Time Sea Otter Classic and Pebble Beach Food & Wine. For details and more info on the above events, please visit our online calendar.
Have a great and eventful weekend.
