A man was shot and killed in Salinas Aug. 10, marking the city's 17th murder of the year, according to police.
18-year-old Alfredo Velasco, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to a local hospital where he died, according to the Salinas Police Department.
Officers responded to a report of the shooting at the intersection of Eucalyptus Drive and Parkway Road in Salinas Saturday afternoon at about 4:20pm, police say.
Three suspects—Nathaniel Sparks, 22, Kristofer Hargrove, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile—have been arrested in relation to the case, which is being investigated as gang related, says Salinas Police Department Deputy Chief Terry Gerhardstein.
Soon after police were called, officers found a black pickup truck that matched witness descriptions near Market and Ivy streets, says Gerhardstein. Police attempts to stop the truck led to a "very reckless" pursuit that ended with the vehicle crashing into a fence by Neil and Merced streets. The suspects fled the truck, but were caught after a ground search. The men were arrested about an hour-and-a-half after the initial police call about the murder.
Police say the truck had been stolen in Madera County in January. All the suspects had previous criminal records and the victim had been a gang member.
