Homeless

A man asks for spare money near Trader Joe's on Munras Avenue in downtown Monterey across from an empty lot where two homeless men were found dead this morning.

Two homeless men were found dead Monday morning near downtown Monterey.

The men were found lying next to each other on a dirt lot across the street from Trader Joe's at about 9:15am, Monterey Police Lt. Jeff Jackson says. Both were wearing light-weight clothing.

"They were wearing miscellaneous clothing, not a lot of clothing for how cold it was last night," Jackson says.

Although an autopsy has yet to be conducted, Jackson says they likely died from exposure to the cold. Someone discovered the pair and called for medical attention. Foul play was never suspected.

Jackson says police officers approached the two men on Sunday to offer them resources or a shelter, but the men declined to be helped.

The men have not yet been identified as authorities continue to seek their families for notification.
