In response to security lapses, increased safety precautions are implemented at the Presidio.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to an Aug. 8 incident at the Presidio, including the FBI.

A planned training exercise involving simulated gunfire at the Presidio of Monterey was called off today when an individual made "credible threats" to the installation.

According to a statement released by Presidio officials, local emergency responders that were in place for the training—Monterey Fire Department and Presidio Police—"were able to seamlessly transition into the real world situation and begin investigating."

Earlier tweets sent out by the Presidio indicate a suspect was taken into custody after making "verbal threats," and a suspicious vehicle was investigated by the FBI and Presidio officials. That vehicle was ultimately deemed not to be a threat.

And while an "all clear" was declared at 12:47pm, the investigation is ongoing and Presidio spokeswoman Tonya Townsell confirms the suspect remains in custody, but won't divulge whose custody or who is doing the questioning.

About 500 people were evacuated from almost a dozen buildings in response to the incident and relocated elsewhere at the installation.

Perfect. Just when I was telling a friend that perhaps - finally - DLI would open up to vehicle traffic again in my lifetime THIS happens. I can avoid the daily tunnel-jam pretty easily, but I feel for those who cannot. At the very LEAST they could let their own employees OUT at the end of the day from more gates, that would help a lot. Not to mention how good it would be for businesses outside the old gates that have struggled since 9/11 to just stay alive as gates closed and their drive-by customers dwindled accordingly. Let's hope the cities of Monterey and Pacific Grove will one day work with decision makers at DLI on making this happen.
