It's nut good news.
Trader Joe's issued announced voluntary recall of some its packaged walnuts today after a laboratory discovered Salmonella during routine sample testing.
The products are: "Raw California Walnut Pieces" (16 oz.), "Raw California Walnut Halves & Pieces" (16 oz.), "Raw California Walnut Baking Pieces" (16 oz.), "Raw California Premium Walnut Halves" (16 oz.) and "Organic Raw Walnut Halves & Pieces" (12 oz.).
The 16 oz. walnuts in question have best by date of 12/2015, while the affected 12 oz. packages have dates from Oct. 15, 2015 to Dec. 1, 2015.
The walnuts are no longer being sold but the California Department of Public Health is concerned they are still out there in people's homes.
A statement sent out by the department summarizes Salmonella symptoms:
"Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, which may be bloody. Most infected people recover within a week. Some may develop complications that require hospitalization. Infants, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for more severe illness.
"CDPH recommends that consumers experiencing any ill effects after consuming these products consult their health care provider. Consumers that observe the product being offered for sale are encouraged to report the activity to the CDPH toll-free complaint line at (800) 495-3232."
