His car may have a 0-60 time of “eventually,” the engine is “F’d” according to the mechanic, and its color may unfortunately be too similar to that of excrement, but it allowed Robert Peterson of Salinas to sputter out of Car Week as an award winner.
But whether it’s an award to be proud of is debatable.
Peterson received the “Sight for Sour Eyes” award for his 1998 Chevrolet Metro on Saturday, Aug. 17 during Concours d’Lemons at the Seaside City Hall lawn.
He said he likes to buy cars at auctions “without even looking at them.” Peterson purchased the two-door hatchback Metro and its 55-horsepower (at least when it was new) about six months ago.
Speaking to Alan Galbraith, the “head gasket” of Concours d’Lemons, as he was getting the award, Peterson said the Metro has the nickname of “Poopmobile.”
“My daughter said it kind of looks like a turd,” he said. “She said, ‘Daddy, please don’t drive me to school in the poopmobile.’ The name kind of stuck.”
Concours d’Lemons, presented by Hagerty and other sponsors, is an annual lighthearted event put on during Car Week that celebrates the odd and rusty of the automobile world. Saturday’s showing included Edsels, a pair of Pontiac Azteks and plenty of Volkswagens, among many other vehicles.
Among the many awards was the Worst of Show, which went to a 1975 Lincoln Continental nicknamed “Buttercup” owned by Chris Overzet of Brentwood, which is covered in fur and complete with a stuffed horse on the roof and a saddle where people can sit. Award winners received various dollar-store goodies, including portable fire extinguishers.
