On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced passengers from the Grand Princess Cruise ship potentially exposed to COVID-19 were headed to Asilomar Conference Grounds, a state-owned facility, for a 14-day mandatory quarantine.
It was a surprise to Pacific Grove and Monterey County officials who were not consulted in advance. Four people arrived that night; as of March 13, the number of passengers rose to 19.
Two days later Aramark, the contractor that runs the grounds, suspended operations, cancelled all conferences and guest stays through April 13, and sent all employees away.
Newsom said in a press conference on March 15 that all patients in quarantine at Asilomar will be tested for the virus. If any have COVID-19, they'll have to test negative twice before they're released.
The section of the conference grounds where the passengers are staying is now fenced off and patrolled by security. State and federal staff are on site to tend to the passengers' needs.
