Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those people who died while serving in the U.S. military. In Monterey County, home to a large number of service members and veterans, there are several ceremonies taking place on Monday, May 27.
One long-standing tradition in the Castroville/Moss Landing area, the Avenue of the Flags, is back after a three-year hiatus due to Covid. The community is honoring local heroes with the event that begins at 9am with coffee and doughnuts, followed by the ceremony from 10am-noon. It takes place at the Castroville Public Cemetery, 8442 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing.
Below is a list of other ceremonies taking place on Monday. All events are free and open to the public.
10:30am:
Navy Auxiliary/Monterey Coast Guard Wreath Laying, Monterey Coast Guard Pier, Monterey;
11am:
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Observance, Salinas Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Veterans Way, Salinas;
American Legion Post 694 Observation, 694 Legion Way, Marina; a lunch is offered after the ceremony;
American Legion Post 521 Observation, Devendorf Park, Ocean and Junipero avenues, Carmel;
Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Memorial Ceremony, 2900 Parker Flats Cut Off Road, Seaside.
