It may not be home to $25 million mansions or a trademarked cypress tree, but Seaside quietly has two of the best—and underrated—golf courses on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Professional Golfers Association has taken notice, and announced yesterday on their website that the 2015 Senior PGA Professional National Championship will take place at Seaside's Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses Oct. 15-18.
“Golfers who have experienced the challenges of Bayonet and Black Horse come away feeling that they have played two of the best public courses in the country,” PGA of America President Derek Sprague says in the statement. “In 2012, these courses challenged our finest playing PGA Professionals, and we look forward to another great Championship this fall.”
The total purse for the 264-player tourney is $285,000, and the top 35 finishers go on to play in the 77th Senior PGA Championship in Michigan the following May.
“We look forward to presenting the courses in great shape for this Championship," Dick Fitzgerald, director of Seaside Resort Development, which operates Bayonet and Black Horse, says in the statement.
Originally designed by two Army generals in the early 1960's, the courses got a makeover by Gene Bates in 2007.
