Savage winds. Mountainous waves slamming the coast. And rain—always rain.
Such is “Crosby Weather,” the elements that typically beset the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Two years ago, the tournament was called after 54 holes with Pebble Beach in a weather lockdown. In 2018, caddies were seen making “hail angels” as a storm hit. Snow fell back in 1962. And in 1996 conditions were so severe that the PGA Tour decided to cancel the event when play became impossible.
The current forecast is for rain to hit the tournament possibly on Saturday, almost certainly for Sunday’s final round. This is following 2025, when a storm front moved in during second-round play and the drama of 2024.
Such is the history of the Pro-Am—and least in popular imagination.
Yet according to Golden Gate Weather Services, Crosby Weather is not a given. Indeed, over the past 50 years there have been just over 20 when conditions remained dry the entire four days. Historical data collected by the company suggests that the possibility of rain on any given day during the event is about 35 percent.
There have been some nice spells. Rain stayed away in both 2015 and ’16. The weather also held for back-to-back years in 2010 and ’11. There was a three-year dry stretch from 2001-’03.
Still, poor weather is always a possibility during the Central Coast’s rainy season. And it can be memorable. In 1998, for example, the final rounds were postponed until August after almost three inches of rain fell, leaving pools of water on the course. When play resumed, more than half the field dropped out due to conflicts.
On six occasions since 1976, tour officials were forced to call the event after 54 holes, including 2024. The year before—the last with celebrities in the field—the amateur title was presented after 54, with the pros concluding on Monday following a wet weekend.
So Crosby Weather is real. Sometimes.
