Pfeiffer Fire notes: False arson alarms, public rain dances and pro bono house insurance advice.

• KION News incorrectly and irresponsibly reported an arrest of a suspect involved in the start of the fire. As Weekly Editor Mary Duan tweeted (kindly), "Way to yell in a crowded forest, boneheads."

• One good thing about incredible destruction and devastation: incredible photos. Basil Sanborn of Glen Oaks Lodge is one of many with a wealth of stirring shots. Check out the half-burned wreath.

• Casey Branch, a lawyer specialized in insurance, will be at The Big Sur Roadhouse at 4pm answering any questions regarding home owners/ renters insurance, free to anyone from the Big Sur community.

• Speaking of Big Sur Roadhouse, it's been a hub of resilience, with Exec Chef Matt Glazer and his new wife Danielle doling out food and meds, respectively.

• Our news team was a little skeptical when Peninsula-based photographer/Big Sur part-time resident and kindred spirit Michelle Magdalena Maddox said she was doing a rain dance at Asilomar. But she called her "Hummingbird Sisters" for a 3pm session Tuesday, Dec. 17—"Bring your rainstick and drum. Better Late than Never. Aho."—and with the help of  Julie Marie Capili, Elske Daigle, Tracy Parker and Salina Muñoz, sent prayers and energies south. It was raining within about an hour, at least in Seaside, and a small rain storm was offshore earlier Wednesday morning.

• The same group who administered the 2008 Basin Complex Fire relief funds, Coast Property Owners Association, has re-activated. Details on their website.

• The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter will close the Client Service Center located at the Fernwood Resort Big Sur at 5pm tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 18) but will continue to provide client services to evacuated residents with two Red Cross response vehicles in the area on Thursday and Friday. Affected residents, who need assistance, can call the 24-hour Red Cross Client Assistance hotline at 831-320-9989 to speak with a caseworker.

• From the Welcome-to-Big Sur File: Locals are not thrilled with how Cal Fire handled structure rescue, or how CHP and others directed traffic on roads. 

• Crowd-funding opportunities to support big-hearted folks—artists, families and even the fire chief—are sprouting up like wildflowers after the fires and rain. They include: The Neffs, who lost it all and didn't have renters insurance; The Perez Family, whose teenage son fought the flames valiantly and who lost all their belongings; Kodiak Greenwood, who lost his home and all his equipment; Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Martha Karstens, whose home burned as she was fighting the fire; and The Van Allen family.

• There's more where that came from: Dale Diesel; Lee Ann Achterberg and Dai Lesty; and Jessica Pinney also lost essentially all their possessions.

• Kona Jerry's BBQ Catering was among the many food service pros jumping to aid. He brought 30 cooked chicken to Fernwood earlier this morning.
