victims' remembrance event

Red cutouts representing homicide victims were part of a remembrance event in April 2017 at the Monterey County administration building in Salinas.

For Debbie Aguilar, it's been a heart breaking decade-and-a-half wait, with no results.

It was 15 years ago this month that her 18-year-old son Stephen was shot down in Salinas.

No witnesses came forward, and the case went cold.

Out of Aguilar's grief was born activism, however. For many years now she's led a support group called A Time for Grieving and Healing.

Earlier this year she told the Weekly she had lost hope her son's case would ever be solved.

But as the anniversary of her son's death approached, something changed for her.

She and other parents of murdered children decided it was time to pressure the City of Salinas and the Salinas Police Department to increase efforts to solve cold case homicides.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Aguilar and dozens of other parents plan to meet in front of Salinas City Hall starting at 2pm for a "peaceful stance," she says.

They will lock arms and hold up photos of their lost loved ones.

At 4pm, the group will move inside the city hall rotunda for the start of the Salinas City Council meeting. They want to take advantage of the public comment period at the start of the meeting to ask the council for more resources to solve the crimes.

"The purpose of our whole thing is to provide a voice for the fallen victims of unsolved crimes in Monterey County," says Aguilar. "There’s an enormous number of cold cases, and they remain unsolved for too many years."

The parents are also soft launching a new website, coldcasecampaign.com. The site will feature photos and information about different cases.

Aguilar says the group hopes to raise money to one day offer rewards for information leading to the arrest of suspects.
