MPC no longer on probation, accreditation commission announces.

Monterey Peninsula College is officially off probation and is getting its accreditation reaffirmed, it was announced June 15.

President Walt Tribley, the college’s staff and faculty and the MPC Board of Trustees have been working furiously to meet deadlines set by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in February 2017.

At that time the accreditation commission put MPC on notice with 22 recommendations. MPC was required to fix the issues by March 15, 2018.

A few of the requirements included balancing the budget, assessing the college’s hundreds of courses for student learning outcomes and updating Board of Trustee policies.

Tribley announced to the board on March 13 that all requirements had been met in time for the deadline.

The accrediting commission officially informed Tribley on June 15 that it is removing probation and will reaffirm MPC’s accreditation for 18 months, according to a press release.

“On behalf of the Commission, I wish to express appreciation for the diligent work and thoughtful reflection that Monterey Peninsula College undertook to respond to these requirements,” said Richard Winn, president of the commission, in a letter to the college.

The commission will visit MPC during the 18-month period to check on its progress. The college is required to submit a follow-up report by Nov. 1.
