The mother of the 14-year-old who was impregnated by her father, resulting in the baby found dead in Moss Landing on Aug. 1, appeared in Monterey County Superior Court today for an arraignment hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Dressed in a striped prison uniform and handcuffed, Ofelia Garcia Ortega wore a headset that allowed her to listen to a Spanish interpreter. She silently stared ahead for most of the proceeding, and glanced occasionally to the TV and film cameras snapping her picture from the gallery.
She did not enter a plea to the charges against her, as she requested a Mixteco interpreter, which was not immediately available. Her arraignment was rescheduled to Oct. 8.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office has charged her with child endangerment. They also accused her of allowing her daughter to drive without a license and allowing her to not be in school. Prosecutors also allege that she made her daughter work in agricultural fields when she was 13 years old. They also have charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Both child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor are misdemeanors. She is also charged with two felonies for allegedly possessing a forged identification card.
The father of the 14-year-old and her baby, Sergio Galvez Perez, is also in custody, and has been charged with sexually assaulting her, incest, child endangerment and more.
The 14-year-old was found in Mexico, as was Galvez Perez, the Sheriff's Office announced Oct. 4. The Sheriff's Office suspected her of murder after her infant child, dubbed by authorities as "Baby Angelita," was infant discovered dead on the side of the road. The District Attorney's Office has not filed charges against the teen.
