The 14-year-old who gave birth to an infant found dead in Moss Landing, and her father, Sergio Galvez Perez, who authorities suspect raped her, were found by Mexican authorities, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday, Oct. 4.
The case ignited widespread attention after a baby girl was found dead in Moss Landing Aug. 1 on the 100 block of Struve Road. Authorities named her "Baby Angelita." The infant was the child of the 14-year-old and her father, who has been charged with sexually assaulting her, child endangerment, incest and more.
Authorities believed her father, 38, then took her with him to Mexico, leading to an investigation involving the Sheriff's Office, the FBI and Mexican authorities.
The 14-year-old is safe and in the care of Mexican authorities, the Sheriff's Office said. Galvez Perez was arrested in Mexico after being found with narcotics.
The Sheriff's Office obtained an arrest warrant Aug. 31 for the 14-year-old on suspicion of murder, after finding evidence that she had allegedly given birth to the infant, and left it on the road. The infant had signs of traumatic injury, according to the Sheriff's Office.
District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni's office has not charged the 14-year-old with a crime. However, in addition to the charges against Galvez Perez, the District Attorney's Office has charged her mother, 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega, with child endangerment. All are residents of the Castroville/Salinas area.
On Sept. 8, the Sheriff's Office issued an Amber Alert asking the public to look for the teen, who they said had been last seen on Aug. 4 around 2am in Salinas. (The Weekly is not publishing her name at this time because she is a minor and has not been charged with a crime.)
The Sheriff's Office said they would provide more information at a later date, and that the investigation remains active.
