Monterey Peninsula College

Two years after Monterey Peninsula College officials were placed on probation for being out of compliance with accreditation standards, they’re now announcing all worries are over for now. The college’s accreditation is reaffirmed until October 2023, the college announced Jan. 28.

The college was put on probation in February 2017 by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, citing 22 separate improvements that needed to be made in order to keep its accreditation.

A 78-page report detailed how the school was considered out of compliance in areas such as student learning outcomes, planning and evaluation, technology infrastructure and financial resources.

Besides needing to assess learning outcomes for all classes and identify performance gaps, the college also needed to focus on improving its evaluation of services at its satellite campuses in Marina and Seaside.

The report also pointed out “network vulnerabilities” and recommended a more secure firewall to protect the college’s technology infrastructure.

MPC had one year to fix the issues, and last March MPC President and Superintendent Walt Tribley happily announced the college had met the deadline. He called the effort among all the staff “superhuman.”

Then last June the ACCJC confirmed the school was no longer on probation and its accreditation would be reaffirmed.  When the commission met Jan. 9-11 in Honolulu, members reviewed MPC’s case and voted in favor of the reaffirmation.

“This good news is welcome and reaffirming of more than our accreditation,” Tribley said in a press release. “It shows that MPC can pull together and achieve positive results for the good of the institution and the students we serve.”
