Every vote counts in an election. This rings even more true in the current three-way race for county supervisor in District 1.

The latest vote count shows Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, winning the seat outright in the June 7 primary, and avoiding a November general election runoff.

Winning outright requires 50-percent of the vote plus one; if no candidate achieves that threshold, the top two vote-getters go to a runoff.

“I thought an over-50-percent result would be impossible, but it certainly was a result of knocking on all those doors and talking directly to so many voters,” Alejo says about the latest results. “I’ll be watching out for the few remaining votes, but i hope it holds.”

Incumbent Fernando Armenta, who had held his seat for 16 years, is trailing behind with 25 percent of the vote, and Salinas City Councilman Tony Barrera bumping close to Armenta with 24 percent of votes.

About 5,900 provisional ballots remain to be counted and the next result released on Monday June 27, but it is not yet known how many of those ballots are from District 1 voters.
