Latest on the Pfeiffer Fire: 74-percent containment, rain drops and a night of gusty winds.

A meteorologist today joined the ranks of the growing team in Big Sur addressing the Pfeiffer Fire. 

That's because they're predicting a windy night, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour off Pfeiffer Point. The meteorologist teamed with firefighters to simulate high winds, and they found embers could move far—as much as three quarters of a mile. 

The good news: There's 90-percent humidity, and even a few raindrops fell at a community meeting this afternoon at the Big Sur Ranger Station. 

Firefighters are also exceeding their own expectations on fire containment; they'd been hoping for 50 percent by Wednesday evening, but they are already at 74 percent. The total acreage burned is 843. 

"Crews did make very good progress last night and today," Incident Commander Mark Nunez said. 

There's concern about unburned material left in the fire's path that could catch if the fire changes course in the wind.

"We're anticipating strong wind tonight after midnight," Nunez said. "Any unburned islands are going to get tested tonight." 

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that crews had been burning vegetation left behind in the fire's path to eliminate fuel. They were burning new lines along Sycamore Canyon, Highway 1 and Clear Ridge Road to help contain the fire and remove some fuel in advance.
