It is all fun and games until a massive humpback whale breaches on top of your kayak.
On Saturday morning that's what happened to two people on a kayaking tour in Moss Landing. The couple settled their tandem kayak, along with about a dozen other kayakers, next to 10 to 15 humpback whales partaking in a krill-driven feeding frenzy. About 8 a.m. one of the whales breached on top of their kayak.
"It did a full 180-twist and landed on its stomach," said Mike Sack, captain and owner of Sanctuary Cruises in Moss Landing.
Sack said he witnessed the "massive splash," and one of the passengers on his tour captured the event on video.
The kayakers were not injured, but they told Sack they were definitely hit by the whale. The kayak overturned when the whale's flipper hit it. It took some time for the couple to get back on the kayak since it was temporarily flooded.
"They got very lucky. They were two to three feet from getting crushed," Sack said.
