Marina house fire

It only took first responders minutes to arrive, but by that time, disastrous damage had already been done.

According to a statement from the Marina Fire Department, at around 8:45pm Sept. 10, firefighters responded to a structure fire at a house at 3005 Max Circle in Marina. When they arrived, smoke and flames were coming out of the garage.

Nine adults and one toddler were able to escape safely, the statement said, and firefighters rescued one dog; other dogs were in a back room and survived unharmed.

It took about 30 minutes for firefighters—who also came from Seaside, Presidio of Monterey and North County—to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the house is not habitable, according to the statement. Officials estimate there was $192,500 dollars of damage, excluding personal belongings.

The Red Cross of the Central Coast provided financial aid and temporary shelter for the displaced residents.

Emma Hubler, who was among the residents living in the house, said she think a washing machine in the garage may have been what sparked the fire; in the past, she says, she and her housemates suspected it was faulty and may present a fire risk.

She also says one resident of the house wasn't there at the time, and that the fire displaced 11 people in total.

Hubler says she's staying at her father's place for now, and that most of her former housemates are staying in a motel.

She says that much of the house in was destroyed in fighting the fire—many of the ceilings were knocked out—and that the home's owners are planning to rebuild.

"It’s something you don’t think is ever going to happen to you," she says, adding, "I'm going to be okay."
