At Motorlux, the show began before attendees even stepped into the venue proper.
The fairways of the Monterey Pines Golf Club served as the event’s parking lot, where models from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lucid, Porsche and others reigned supreme. A rare GT Super, a restomod based on an Alfa Romeo, drew the most attention as photographers crowded around it. One unknown exotic-shaped vehicle was hidden under a cover, and a good thing too—a heavy mist coated Monterey later in the night, splattering the once-gleaming vehicles.
Upon entering Motorlux’s main grounds at the Monterey Jet Center on Wednesday, Aug. 13, sitting front and center was a series of Shelby Mustangs, and not just any Shelbys: Some were the new Super Snake-R model, unveiled to the world that night at the event.
A limited number of the high-performance sports cars will be made for the 2026 model year. Shelby American representatives say the car, built up from a Ford Mustang Dark Horse, features a widened stance with larger tires, and a supercharged V8 engine that gives it “well over” 850 horsepower, among many other enhancements.

Shelby American President Gary Patterson and Vice President of Operations and Senior Designer Vince LaViolette were among the Shelby reps who were showing off the new vehicles to Motorlux attendees.
LaViolette says the designers asked themselves what kind of car they would want to see on the race track, and what features it would have. The result is the Super Snake-R.
“The new suspension is a real game-changer,” he said. “The R is far more solid, more connected and more poised than any other Super Snake we’ve built. And it is so adjustable that an experienced driver can easily tailor it to their taste. If you are ready to be a track king, your car has arrived.”
With a starting price of $224,995, the Super Snake-R will be available to order soon.
Aaron Shelby, the grandson of Carroll Shelby, the famed race car driver who later founded the high-performance vehicle company, was also on hand with his family at Motorlux, noting that it’s going to be a busy week.
At the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, Aug. 17, the Shelby Cobra 427 will be a judged class, and Aaron Shelby will be handing out the award to the winner.
At The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Carmel Valley on Friday, Aug. 15, the Shelby Mustang GT350 will be a featured class in recognition of its 60th anniversary.
Shelby was also part of a panel discussion on Aug. 14 for the first installment of the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum.
In addition to the jets intermixed with the cars, more than 70 food and drink options were offered throughout the grounds. These included knackwurst, bockwurst and pretzels dipped in beer cheese from The Meatery in Seaside, and fried chicken and beef sliders with fries from Woody’s at the Airport in Monterey.
Broad Arrow Auctions was also underway for the duration of Motorlux, where cars were going for seven figures at a regular clip.
