Helicopter dropping water on fire.

Air drops were made on the Coast Fire due to difficult terrain, similar to the Palo Colorado Fire in 2022 (shown here).

The forward rate of spread in the latest fire to hit Monterey County has been stopped as of June 17, according to a Los Padres National Forest Service spokesperson.

The Coast Fire ignited on June 17 south of the Skinner Ridge Viewpoint on Pico Blanco Mountain Coast Road in Big Sur. Access to the fire line is through difficult terrain for hand crews. Water drops were made by helicopter and air tanker.

As of 2:32pm Tuesday, June 18, the fire is 20 acres in size with 20 percent containment. Two Los Padres Hotshot crews arrived Tuesday, June 18 to assist with cutting fire lines and containment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
