Members of the public have one last chance to provide input on the plans for the development of Palo Corona Regional Park.
Under the current plan, the 4,585-acre property will see an expansion of its trail network, including connector trails to other areas, the conversion of golf paths into multi-use trails and the use of some trails for cross country and mountain trail running events. The plan also calls for two permitted backcountry campsites, an off-leash dog park and an emergency command center for wildfires and other natural disasters.
A public comment period opened on April 29 when the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District released an environmental review that cleared the development plan drafted last year. The deadline to submit comments is May 29.
The park traces its origin to the 2004 acquisition of a former ranch property. At first, public access was limited and visitors were required to obtain permits to enter any portion of the park. In 2016, the Park District purchased the adjacent 190-acre former Rancho Cañada Golf Club, eventually building a headquarters on the site and opening it up last year for permitless access.
