On Easter weekend in March 2016, a 10-foot metal cross was erected on Del Monte Beach in Monterey by the recreation trail. A few days later, the cross was removed by city workers.
Under the California state constitution, religious iconography is prohibited on public land under the no preference clause, City Manager Mike McCarthy said at the time.
The cross was kept in storage and the owner was given 90 days to retrieve it. But, no one showed up to claim it.
Now the large cross has a new home at St. John's Chapel, 1490 Mark Thomas Drive, in Monterey. It was delivered this week by Public Works employees.
“We are thrilled and honored to have the cross,” rector of St. John’s Chapel Reverend Robert M. Ott said in a prepared statement. “It will be installed in an area accessible to the public at any time.”
The cross will be erected on an island in the parking lot in time for Christmas.
