More than two months after their passing, information on the cause of death of two homeless men in Monterey has been released by the Monterey County Coroner's Office.
Last December, Trevor Hansen, 38, and Jonathan Richards, 56, were found dead across the street from Trader Joe’s on Munras Avenue after a particularly cold and stormy night.
Hansen, who had battled with alcohol addiction for years, died from “acute ethanol intoxication,” says Detective Al Martinez with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Alcohol coupled with the cold was the fatal mix, Martinez continues.
While a specific cause of death for Richards has yet to be released by the coroner, drugs and alcohol have been ruled out, says Martinez, who added the culprit was likely hypothermia.
When the men were found dead around 9:15am on a Monday morning, they were wearing light clothing. The night before they were approached by Monterey police officers, they were offered information on homeless services. They declined but asked for blankets which the police were unable to provide.
Since their deaths Monterey Police have been supplied with blankets by the Salvation Army and motel vouchers purchased with city funds to hand to the homeless.
