The impact of a fatal DUI crash on Carmel Valley Road a little over two weeks ago continues to reverberate around the valley.
Carmel High School student Annabelle Vandenbroucke, 16, who died on July 18, six days after the head-on collision, was remembered by friends and family gathered at Carmel Valley Community Park the evening of July 26.
Hundreds of people showed up with blankets and lawn chairs for a casual memorial service on the grass.
"It was wonderful, it was just a nice remembrance of my dear daughter," says her father, Jerome Vandenbroucke.
Vandenbroucke was the passenger in a Nissan Pathfinder driven by her friend, 18-year-old Margot McNally, on July 12. The 16-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt.
Her father says she was in a coma after the crash all six days. "We knew she was going to die," he says. The family consented to organ donation, which he calls a "slight silver lining to this whole thing."
McNally was arrested the night of the head-on crash by the California Highway Patrol for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury. McNally suffered a broken tailbone and was released from the hospital on July 17.
She is currently charged with one count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two counts of DUI causing injury, with an enhancement, according to Monterey County Assistant District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni. If convicted, McNally could face 11 years and eight months in prison. An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30pm, on Aug. 21.
In the meantime, the family of the woman in the second car who was seriously injured in the crash, Sarah Coleman, 69, launched a Go Fund Me fundraising account on July 25.
Coleman is a life-long Monterey and Carmel Valley resident who trains horses for a living. Friends and neighbors have rallied to support her, says her nephew Thomas Boles, and some suggested the family launch a fundraising page so that they could donate to help with expenses. More than $2,400 was raised in two days.
“We’ve just been blown away by the immediate support,” Boles says.

“She’s still hospitalized and she’s had some surgeries and she’s awaiting further surgeries,” he says. Her right leg suffered a severe compound fracture in the crash.
“But other than that we’re very grateful for how she is doing, it could have been so much worse,” he says. “If you could see her truck you’d be shocked at how well she is doing.”
