MIIS closing

MIIS faculty and staff gather outside the Irvine Auditorium Aug. 28 after a meeting about the institution's fate.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey will be shutting down its master's programs by June 2027, Middlebury President Ian B. Baucom announced today to faculty and staff at a 2pm meeting on the MIIS campus.

In a subsequent video message and statement on Middlebury's website, Baucom made the details public: "I write today with difficult news," the statement begins.

Self-sustaining centers will not be cut, meaning James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies will remain indefinitely, and summer programs including the School of the Environment and the Bread Loaf School of English will remain through at least 2026.

Furthermore, the online International Education Management and TESOL will be discontinued on the same timeline as residential degree programs.

Baucom adds that "we will pause consideration of any repurposing, lease, or sale of property until the completion of programs in June 2027."

Oh my, this is sad news indeed. I used to live nearby and always found it refreshing to walk through the MIIS campus on my daily walks. I think COVID is responsible for this, as I noticed that things haven't returned to pre-COVID levels of students. Well, at least they are not shutting down everything, so they'll still have a presence here.

As someone lucky enough to have team taught a graduate course at the Institute on sustainable approaches to Military Base Planning and Reuse, I am saddened by this news. I found the students to be talented and motivated, the faculty and staff helpful and am greatful to Dean Morgan and others who supported our efforts.
