The former chief and the current acting chief of the King City Police Department were arrested early this morning, along with three other officers, in what some law enforcement officials are describing as a widespread investigation into police corruption in that South County city.
Acting Chief Bruce Miller and former Chief Nick Baldiviez, who was with the King City Department for 24 years (the last nine as chief) were arrested in the early morning hours by Monterey County Sheriff's Department deputies, the culmination of a lengthy investigation by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
Also taken into custody were Officers Mario Mottu, Sr., and Jaime Andrade, and Sgt. Bobby Carrillo.
Baldiviez retired from the department last September after a lengthy and unexplained absence from duty. During the press conference announcing his retirement, Baldiviez said, "I was so fortunate to be able to serve this fine city…I've had my ups and had my downs, but still I wouldn't change anything. We have a good force of people here." He attributed his absence to an accumulation of vacation hours he needed to burn.
Carrillo, who was served a search warrant at his home in Soledad in January, was also arrested at his home. It was not clear if the other current officers were arrested at their homes or at the police department, but at least one was taken into custody while on duty at King City Police headquarters. The Carrillo search warrant, along with another warrant served that day on the King City Police Department and the home of city IT contractor Kenneth Tippery, remain sealed by a judge's order.
As of 10:00am, four of the men had been booked into the Monterey County Jail and Andrade was in the jail awaiting booking.
Carrillo faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime while serving as an officer, and his bail was set at $60,000. Baldiviez was booked on charges with embezzlement by an officer, and bail was set at $10,000.
Miller and Mottu each face charges of asking for a bribe, and bail was set at $20,000 and $10,000, respectively.
"I haven't talked to our investigators yet," Chief Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz says. The DA's office was in the middle of putting together a press release and Spitz said officials would hold a press conference at 2pm to discuss the arrests.
