Alejo, Monning issue statements on King City police arrests.

King City officials have voiced apology and disappointment, but others are furious with allegations that surfaced yesterday that the city's top cops have been part of a scheme to impound and keep cars of poor Latino drivers.

In statements issued Wednesday, lawmakers Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, and State Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, voiced anger. 

“I cannot help but feel outraged by the alleged actions of the six King City police officers in question. The thought that hundreds of my constituents—many of whom are poor, hardworking immigrants—had their cars taken, impounded and embezzled by the very people who had sworn to uphold and enforce the law is disheartening," Alejo said.

"These few bad actors have damaged the reputation of an honorable group of men and women and tarnished the history of a beautiful city.

 “In the coming weeks, I hope to see justice served both for the sake of families in our community and for the integrity of law enforcement everywhere.”

Monning voiced a similar sentiment: "I am incensed and outraged about the corruption scandal within the King City Police Department. Instead of protecting and serving King City residents, they violated the public's trust and preyed on some of the community's most vulnerable residents. 

"While I hope this is an isolated incident, I fear it is not. There continue to be situations throughout the state whereby the immigrant workforce is subjugated to tyranny of those abusing their authority."
