Record Store Day Black Friday: Your local guide.

Since 2007, every third Saturday in April has become known as a holiday for vinyl lovers everywhere.

And every year, Record Store Day grows even bigger.

In short, it's a celebration of the messy little independent record store that used to appear on every Main St., U.S.A town.

Whether it was Gary, Indiana or Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the local record store was like a church where music fans could talk music and expand their musical knowledge and pass on recommendations to younger generations. 

But these spots have long since become endangered; most of them just couldn't compete with the big-box chains and the Internet, and were forced to shut their doors.

Record Store Day aims to get people back into the local record stores that have endured and survived. RSD urges people to buy, buy and buy. As incentive, a limited number of special edition RSD exclusives are released (usually, each store has only one or two copies of titles)—initially, everything was strictly on vinyl, but now there are even some special edition T-Shirts released by bands for RSD. 

Over the past few years, RSD has expanded to include a second day in November, more specifically, Black Friday, aka the day after Thanksgiving. 

Locally, we're pretty lucky to have four record stores.

Recycled Records (604 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey, 375-5454) is gearing up for a big celebration Friday, with raffles and free snacks throughout the day. Sweet and overly enthusiastic owner Sean McCann says he has easily over a few dozen RSD releases on vinyl that'll be for sale.

Billie Holiday: AT STORYVILLE  Format: 12" Vinyl: Three live sets at Storyville in Boston, in 1951 and 1953. These discreet recordings capture Lady Day in prime emotive voice. On most of the selections she is accompanied by the Carl Drinkard Trio, but six others find her joined by Buster Harding's Trio; the great tenor Stan Getz sits in on three of these numbers. Previously out of press for over 25 years, this historic recording has now been remastered and pressed on a stunning white vinyl. Limited to 3000 copies worldwide, each copy will be individually numbered with a silver foil stamp

Metallica: LORDS OF SUMMER  Format: 12" Vinyl: Limited edition 12" includes "First Pass" (studio) version on side A, as well as a live version at the Rock in Rome Sonisphere Festival on July 1, 2014. Little Richard: LITTLE RICHARD  Format: 12" Vinyl: Released in 1958, Little Richard's sophomore LP rocks hard through all 12 tracks. Issued on cream colored vinyl. Track List: "Good Golly, Miss Molly", "Lucille", "Keep A' Knockin", "The Girl Can't Help It", "Heeby-Jeebies", "Send Me Some Lovin"
