Old Crow Medicine Show plays at the 2023 Rebels & Renegades.

As the California Roots Music Festival gets underway with another solid lineup and the anticipation of sizable crowds, event organizer Good Vibez announced that they were canceling the Rebels & Renegades Music Festival, scheduled for October.

A notice posted to the Rebels & Renegades website noted that organizers Dan and Amy Sheehan, the couple that head Good Vibez, had taken an “honest look” at the recent market for such festivals. “After giving it our all for the past two years, we are having to take a step back and reassess how and where we can grow the Rebel Brand,” the message continued.

Last year—the alt-country and Americana festival’s second go-round—Rebels & Renegades expanded from two days to three after drawing a reasonable 9,000 fans its first year at Monterey County Fair & Event Center. By contrast, Cali Roots attracts approximately 40,000-50,000.

The 2023 edition branched out to include rock headliner Wilco. But that group proved not to be a draw, as fans flocked to the twang of Charley Crockett and others with a country vibe.

For the planned 2024 event, Good Vibez had returned to the two-day schedule and locked in Oct. 12-13. However, no list of performers had been posted.

This is not the first time Good Vibez has canceled a series that did not meet expectations. They canceled the Alta Music Festival in Avila Beach after its 2023 run.

Good Vibez will email ticket holders with refund instructions.
