Loose Caboose (copy)

“It will be sad to see another piece of history leave the area,” says Ed Ciliberti, who found a buyer for the historic train car on Cannery Row, which will be moved to an undisclosed location in California following the closing of the unique vehicle's sale.

After nearly a decade of being the owner and caretaker of the iconic red caboose along the Rec Trail on Cannery Row, local real estate broker Ed Ciliberti has sold the historic train car after the City of Monterey terminated his lease and ordered him to move it elsewhere.

Ciliberti put the unique vehicle up for sale for $75,000 in early May and recently sold it for the full asking price. Ciliberti told the Weekly that the deal is in escrow with the sale pending.

“The purchaser and myself are working out the logistics on having it moved, such as transporters, crane equipment, arrangements for street closures/access points, and any permits that might be required by the City of Monterey, much like when the Green Welcoming Center Train Car that was attached to the Caboose was moved in 2012 to Salinas,” Ciliberti says.

He said that the purchaser of the caboose requested to remain anonymous, but that the train car would be moved to the buyer’s private estate in California, out of the Monterey area.
