Not only is Garner's record considered his best live recording, it's considered to be a catalyst that laid the groundwork for the beginnings of the Monterey Jazz Festival, which debuted at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, two years after the record was first released.
Originally produced in Carmel as part of local promoter Jimmy Lyons' "Sunset Series," Concert By The Sea will be honored with a killer tribute show on the first day of the 58th Monterey Jazz Festival, Sept. 18.
The historic performance will feature Geri Allen, Jason Moran, Christian Sands, Jimmie Cobb, Russell Malone and Darick Oles.
On Sept. 19, there will be a Concert By The Sea panel, featuring producers Geri Allen and Steve Rosenthal, and a Monterey Jazz Festival board member who attended the original Concert By The Sea.
"Erroll Garner personifies the joy of fearless virtuosity and exploration," producer Geri Allen says. "He embodied the very spirit of swing and free improvisation from every vantage point. Singular yet all embracing, Garner blurred the line between great art and popular art."
